Mubarak opposes Israeli proposal
An Israeli proposal that would leave Gaza entirely dependent on Egypt for goods and access was strongly rejected by Egypt 's ruling regime.

The proposal offered that Israel would seal all its land borders deeming Gaza entirely reliant on Egypt for goods and services. Israeli PM Netanyahu came up with the proposal alleging that Israel would disengage from the Gaza Strip. Egypt which had reopened its border with the Gaza Strip following the deadly raid on a flotilla of Gaza-bound aid boats by Israeli forces in May rejected the proposal stressing that Gaza was an essential part of the occupied Palestinian territories and necessary for the future Palestinian state. The meeting was attended by Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit, Yaser Abd-Rabo, of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. The meeting followed Amr Mousa's first visit to the Gaza Strip since he took the post, where he met with Hamas officials and insisted the siege be lifted. |
