Egypt: Two police officers go on trial for Khaled Said torture case

Two policemen accused in the death of 28 year old Khaled Said are expected to go on trial for torture late July in the case that has drawn worldwide attention of governments and rights groups prompting anti-government protests at home and abroad. The incident also raised concerns among Egypt 's US and European allies.

Witnesses and rights groups claim that police officers Awad Suleiman and Mahmoud Salah dragged him out of an internet cafe and violently beat him to death. However after 2 coronary reports Egyptian authorities assert he died of asphyxiation after a drugs wrap was lodged in his throat.

A court statement maintained that the trial slated for July 27 will be headed by Mahmoud Talaat Muftah. The general prosecutor charged the two men, with illegally arresting and physically torturing Said. The charges could carry a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

Two hundred thousand Facebook members have participated in two silent protests in commemoration of Said's death and against police brutality. Thousands of Egyptians are expected to dress in black and participate in a third silent protest planned for July 9.
