Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq the Egyptian Minister of Religious Endowments has urged Muslims worldwide to visit Jerusalem and affirm its Islamic identity.

In an article published in the Jerusalem post, according to an interview in the Arab paper 'Alsharq Alawsat' the minister maintained that Israel’s building in the city could smother Islamic sites hence his call for Muslims to visit the sacred city.

Zaqzouq argued that the visits would undoubtedly be more effective than what he described as 'negative Islamic boycott' asserting that travelling to Jerusalem could garner worldwide attention exposing Israel's hypocrisy and religious discrimination. He stressed that Jerusalem should be perceived as an Islamic issue rather than a Palestinian crisis.
