NDP MP, Sharaf al-Din, on Saturday made a proposal to Dr. Ahmed Fathi Sorour, speaker of the Egyptian People's Assembly, to amend the Egyptian Penal Code, Law No. 58 of 1937, Article 77(d), that any person, who in time of war or peace, is found lurking as a spy or acting as a spy and communicating with others to the detriment of Egypt's security shall be punished with death.

"I made this amendment, after the authorities arrested Tarek abdel Razeq, who currently faces accusations of spying for Israel, to harm the country's supreme national interest," he said, adding that he wanted a harsher punishment against those spying for foreign lands, namely, the death penalty instead of imprisonment in a bid to intimidate anyone who might think to damage the country's interests.
