Public Figures Demand Immediate Investigation into Mubarak’s Ill-Gotten Fortune

Following the scandalous revelation of Mubarak’s fortune, 37 public figures have submitted a complaint to the Attorney General against the President, his two sons, Gamal and Alaa and Suzanne Mubarak their mother.

Following the scandalous revelation of Mubarak’s fortune, 37 public figures have submitted a complaint to the Attorney General against the President, his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, and Suzanne Mubarak, their mother.

According to published reports, the Mubaraks’ fortune ranges between a staggering 40 and 70 billion dollars in addition to ownership of properties in London, New York, and Los Angeles, with reports of ownership of resorts on the Red Sea.

US and British experts report that the family’s wealth dates back to when Mubarak was an air force officer and in a position to benefit from corporate corruption on military contracts.  According to analysts the family was then able to accumulate wealth through business partnerships with foreign investors and companies.

Political science professor at Princeton University Amany Jamal, states that Mubarak’s wealth is similar to other Middle Eastern leaders, adding that there was a lot of corruption in his regime with a stifling of public resources for personal gain.

Protesters and public figures have cited government corruption responsible for the country’s current situation, demanding the immediate ousting of Mubarak and an immediate investigation into how the fortune was accumulated.

According to media reports the bulk of the wealth of the Mubarak family is outside the country, mainly in Switzerland, while observers expect that Mubarak’s wife and his sons also have tremendous wealth in Britain.

The signatories of the submitted complaint against Mubarak and his family demand that there be an investigation into the amount of money smuggled abroad, stressing that there be an immediate travel ban and a freeze on assets. Furthermore, they demand that the necessary action be taken to restore the funds.
