IHRC is delighted to hear about the imminent release of Khairat Al-Shater, Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, after serving 4 years of a 7 year sentence. His release was authorised by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces this afternoon.

IHRC has been campaigning for Al-Shater, as one of its prominent prisoners of faith, asking for his release as well as the abolishment of military courts used against civilians.

Al-Shater, along with other members of the Muslim Brotherhood, were acquitted by a civil court on 29th January 2007. The case was then sent to a Military Tribunal by President Mubarak where they were sentenced to between 3-7 years, on 15th April 2008.

IHRC welcomes his release and calls on the Egyptian authorities to release all political prisoners.
