Protests were held in Cairo on Thursday, by the Syrian community calling on the international community to interfere and take the necessary steps to protect civilians in Syria. The protestors called on them to empower and support the Syrians and help them achieve their goals of democratic transformation.

According to rights groups clashes between security forces and protesters which began in mid-March have left up to 2000 dead, 1600 of them civilians. Protestors in Cairo were demanding the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

During the demonstrations, leading Syrian figure in the community Mohamed al-Hemsy, called on the international community to become pro-active and adopt a firm and clear stance toward massacres taking place in Syria and to urge them to stop the brutal attacks committed against the people.

Al-Hemsy also demanded the immediate withdrawal of security forces and the military from Syrian cities and the referral of the issue to the International Criminal Court.

He called for enabling Arab and international humanitarian aid organizations entry so they can reach all the stricken areas and called for Arab and international media be given permission to enter Syria to inform the world of its current situation.
