Mukhtar Ashri, Chairman of the Legal Committee of the Freedom and Justice Party, expressed his hope that the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) will do its full duty by making it easier for Egyptians abroad to cast their votes in the presidential elections that have just started.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Ashri further expressed surprise at attempts to influence the vote of Egyptians abroad by fabricating another crisis, restricting voting to holders of Egyptian national ID cards, instead of accepting valid Egyptian passports, too - in violation of article 4 of Decree-Law No. 130 for the year 2011.

SPEC is well aware that most Egyptians abroad do not hold Egyptian National I.D’s. Ashri asserted that there is no legal or practical justification for breaching the law.

Furthermore, the legal expert expressed hope that the electoral process abroad would go smoothly and reflect the integrity and transparency all Egyptians are looking for in the first presidential elections after the January 25 revolution.
