Ghariani: Charter-Drafting Panel Received No Formal Withdrawals from Church or Any Other Members
Affirming that Egypt’s constitution-writing panel follows democratic processes every step of the way as it draws up the country’s most important document, the panel’s head announces he received no official withdrawal notices from any members.

Justice Hossam Ghariani, Egyptian judge and Chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA) entrusted with authoring Egypt’s new national charter, affirmed that he did not receive any official withdrawals, neither from representatives of the church, nor any other CA members, and that he would not pay too much attention to what is said in certain media talk-shows.


In a press statement, referring to CA members who publicly announced they had pulled out of the Assembly, Ghariani said: "All of them were working with us very hard. I simply do not see any justification for withdrawal. The opportunity is available to all. We never prevented anyone from expressing their opinion.

"Still, we open our arms for them, and invite them to return. We will go the extra mile, with the democratic process and CA rules our only limits."

During the plenary session last Sunday, Ghariani pointed that there were honorable members sincerely trying, very hard, to dissuade restless colleagues, "and if those colleagues return, we’d welcome them. If they do not, we will not get caught up in side issues. We will complete our work".

Meanwhile, Major-General Mamdouh Shahin, representative of the armed forces in the CA, denied news reports claiming his withdrawal from the CA.

Shahin affirmed, "I just want to say that the representative of the armed forces has not withdrawn as reported by some newspapers."
