The Global Forum for Islamic Parliamentarians (GFIP) expressed deep regret for the shocking massacre of Hawija town in Iraq, which claimed the lives of 44 civilians, after government forces deliberately stormed a peaceful protest camp by citizens rallying against racial discrimination suffered by the Sunni community in Iraq.

In a press statement Wednesday, the GFIP said: "The violent raid is a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and all international norms and conventions on human rights.

"It is most regrettable that the last few months witnessed a noticeable increase in acts of racial discrimination against Sunnis in Iraq, which made them revolt against sectarianism and demand justice and equality and a halt to the government’s racist practices against them in governmental bodies and institutions.

The GFIP urged the Iraqi government to open an urgent investigation into the Hawija massacre, bring the perpetrators to trial, stop the systematic racist practices, respect international conventions and treaties on human rights, provide safety and security for all citizens, without discrimination between Shiite and Sunni populations, and prevent extremist militia from committing any more massacres.

The GFIP further called for the dissemination of a culture of tolerance and rejection of intolerance among all Iraqi communities. This can play a major role in strengthening the bonds of compassion and cooperation among all Iraqi citizens, with their unique ethnically diversity, unmatched in the whole world.
