Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court set June 2 for sentencing in the cases of invalidity of Shura Council and the Constituent Assembly (which drafted the country’s national charter).

Gamal Tag Al-Din, a member of the Legal Committee of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), said: "I expect a new page will be turned, putting an end to desperate attempts to impede the democratic process in Egypt and to cripple and critically undermine the political scene.

"Lawyers have presented constitutional and legal defenses that confirm the Shura Council is immune in accordance with Article 230 of the Constitution, and so the Court has no mandate to proceed with this case."
