Dr. Mohamed Shihata, member of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s Legal Committee, denounced failure of human rights organizations in exercising their role in protecting the rights of anti-coup, pro-legitimacy detainees who defended democracy.

Shihata stressed that it is essential human rights organizations do their work, checking the conditions and treatment of detainees. “They must exercise their role in pressuring coup authorities to allow them to attend investigations with anti-coup, supporters of legitimacy, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and submit reports to the whole world on the status of the detainees”, he added.

Shihata affirmed that solitary confinement in itself is a punishment on top of that inflicted on members of the Muslim Brotherhood, including its Chairman Dr. Badie, and that this punishment is prohibited as set forth in human rights charters to which Egypt is a signatory.
