At dawn on Wednesday, Egyptian security forces arrested Dr. Essam El-Erian, Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s deputy leader and the most prominent opponent of ousted President Hosni Mubarak and the military coup.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt said that Dr. Erian is a leader of high moral and political stature, and that his arbitrary arrest and detention is part and parcel of the intensive, brutal campaign of repression and political persecution that incarcerated Dr. Saad Katatni, FJP Chairman; and Abul-Ela Mady, Wassat Party Chairman; among many leaders of all parties opposed to the treasonous coup – which confirms that the coup commanders and collaborators are actively executing a ferocious vindictive exclusion of all actors in the political scene.

The Brotherhood leader affirmed that Dr. Erian was one of the leaders of the Anti-Coup Pro-Legitimacy National Alliance defending democracy and constitutional legitimacy in Egypt, which remains committed and determined to continue its peaceful struggle to overthrow the traitorous putschists, amid unprecedented public support and positive participation by youths. He further stressed that the will of the people will not be defeated whatever the repression and persecution.
