Sanaa Abdul-Gawwad, the wife of Dr. Mohamed Beltagy – senior leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, said: "Now, Mohamed Beltagy is being tried in 31 trumped up cases. He has already received two life imprisonment court sentences. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison".

In televised remarks, Sanaa confirmed that "Egyptian justice is heavily politicized. It holds the honorable inside prisons. The independence of the judiciary is a myth. The ruling military junta wants to distract anti-coup protesters away from their cause, which is: ending military rule and ousting the junta regime.

"The families of prisoners, martyrs and the injured, those who sacrificed for the homeland, will continue their non-violent defiance activities until the fall of the military coup."

In a statement Tuesday, Dr. Mohamed Beltagy's family rejected the jail sentence against him as pure persecution.
