The Egyptian Coordinating Committee of Rights and Freedoms (ECRF) condemns the arrest of political activist Amr Ali, the April 6 Youth Movement Coordinator (from Menoufia governorate). The ECRF stresses that arrest and detention of activists and opponents of the regime and those involved in civil, political, social or human rights work in Egypt undermines civil society in Egypt.

With such arbitrary arrests, coup authorities clearly show that this regime does not respect human rights or democratic standards or principles, denounces freedom of opinion and expression, does not accept the opinions of others – nor does it wish to give any space at all for freedom for civil society work, except for those directly under its full control.

These are all clear and evident signs the military coup regime has no interest in progress or prosperity for Egypt and its people. Safeguarding and recognizing freedoms, and allowing political practice based on such freedoms, is the solid foundation for the progress and development of any society.

The ECRF demands the immediate release of activist Amr Ali, along with all political activists, and all those who have been detained without real charges, all those thrown in prison for political or social activity or involvement in public affairs or civil society activities.
