Egyptian State Security forces triggered a new wave of “pre-emptive” arrests targeting Muslim Brotherhood advocates from Alexandria and Giza governorates. On Friday, March 31, 2006, police arrested seven while having dinner in a public restaurant in Alexandria. The seven include: Soon after their arrest, security forces stormed the house of Dr. Hassan Al Brens, Prof. of Medicine at Alexandria University and a prominent leader of Muslim Brotherhood in the Governorate, arresting him. The usual government’s pretext for the arrests is the “attempt to revive a banned group (Muslim Brotherhood)” which is ironically represented by 88 members of Parliament! IkhwanWeb: The Egyptian government often follows a policy of “pre-emptive” arrests against advocates of the Muslim Brotherhood, which after the arrest of Dr. Rashaf Bayoumi; it became evident that the crackdown by government is targeting Muslim Brotherhood intelligentsia in a disparate attempt to hinder its reform efforts and cripple its organizational capabilities, a policy that dommed to failure. Such repressive measures always cause widespread sympathy by the public which was reflected on the latest parliamentary elections.
