Egyptian Muslim Brothers great success in elections The general guide (head) of the Muslim brothers in Egypt, Muhammad Mahdi Akef, said that the unhappiness of people regarding the ruling party has increase the number of votes his group got in the first and second phases of the Egyptian legislative elections. Akef explained in press statements that the Egyptians are angry over the performance of the government and the Democratic National Party "because they only brought to those people bitterness and misery," noting that the Egyptian people no longer have confidence in the government and they showed they are against what he described as tyranny, and chose to rally around the Muslim Brothers. Akef sought to eliminate the western fears over the remarkable success of his group in these elections by stressing that the Muslim Brothers will not seek to change the foreign policy of Egypt including the peace treaty with Israel. He explained that the Muslim Brothers do not recognize Israel, but will not fight it either, rather it will honor all treaties Egypt had signed with it. The almost final result of the runoff of the Egyptian legislative elections in which the candidates competed on 115 seats resulted in 31 seats won by the ruling national party against 29 seats for the Muslim Brothers while other 53 seats went for independents. These results increase number of Muslim Brothers parliamentarians from 15 in the former parliament to 76 out of 302 seats before the third round which will be cover less than one third of the total seats number. The deputy chairman of the group Muhammad Habib expected that Muslim Brothers will get in the third and last round of the elections which will be held on December first some 49 seats.
